EPILOGUE

WILLOW

I did not have a sixth sense that something dark and twisted was about to happen. Or that I’d soon be fighting for my life. I was simply focused on grabbing a quick drink with some friends at a nearby restaurant.

As I walked over to the table where Zoey, Emily, and Jenna were already seated, I reminded myself not to stare at the scar slashed across Jenna’s face. My friends were with another woman who I struggled to place.

“Willow!” Zoey jumped up and gave me a hug, then motioned toward the unfamiliar face. “Have you met Fallon?”

“I don’t think so,” I said.

“Fallon and I used to work out at the same gym,” Zoey explained. “Before it burned to the ground, that is.”

Right. The fire. Zoey had seriously been through the wringer.

“Good to meet you.” Fallon shook my hand. “I hope you don’t mind me crashing. I was just finishing up dinner with a friend and saw Zoey here. Thought I’d say hi.”

“It’s always nice to meet someone new.” I smiled.

That was when I spotted him.

Shane Hernandez.

Walking toward the front of the restaurant from the men’s room, he didn’t seem to notice all the women’s eyes in the place being pulled in his direction. He didn’t seem to notice them salivating over his ripped body that tried to break free of his emerald button-down shirt and deliciously tight black pants. His black hair looked effortlessly styled, complementing the olive skin that stretched across his stubbled jaw—a jaw I’d fantasized kissing on more than one occasion.

I wondered if he ever sensed my attraction to him. It had been there since the moment he moved into the apartment next door to mine, but maybe he just saw me as a friend. A person he held the building’s door open for, a person he exchanged mail with whenever the mailman swapped some parcels in the wrong box, and on a really great day, a person he stopped and talked to.

Maybe friend was even too generous of a term.

After all, he knew very little about me.

But that was all about to change.

Because as a detective, he’d soon work my case, determined to uncover the secret of how I’d fallen from a bridge into the deadly river below.

Was it an accident? Was I thrown? If so, who would want me dead?

And would they try again?

Working to uncover the shocking truth about that fateful evening, we had no idea what was about to happen to us both…
